Legal Bites: Could you share the journey that led you to your current position in the field of law? What were the pivotal moments and experiences that shaped your career?

Pallavi Mishra: My journey in the field of law has been a unique blend of familial influence and a personal passion for academia. Coming from a family of lawyers, I was exposed to the intricacies of the legal profession from an early age. However, my interests led me down a different path. After completing my master’s in business law from National Law Institute University, Bhopal, in 2014, I consciously decided to transition into academia.

My academic journey began with a role in teaching at Symbiosis Law School, Pune, from 2015 to 2017 and then at Symbiosis Law School, Noida, from 2018 to the present. This experience has been a pivotal milestone in my career. It allowed me to combine my in-depth knowledge of the law with a genuine enthusiasm for education. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to publish research papers in reputed journals, teach multiple courses, and represent the university on national and international platforms.

Each step in my journey, from my initial exposure to the legal profession within my family to my decision to pursue an academic path, has contributed to my current position. Today, I bring a rich tapestry of experiences and a deep passion for law and education to my role. I am excited about the continuous evolution of my journey and the contributions I can make to both the legal and academic communities.

Legal Bites: How do you, as a faculty member, stay updated on the changing legal landscape and ensure your students receive the most current education?

Pallavi Mishra: As a faculty member, I understand the importance of staying current with the evolving legal landscape to provide my students with a relevant and up-to-date education. To achieve this, I employ several strategies.

Firstly, I engage in continuous research and scholarship to stay abreast of recent developments, landmark cases, and emerging trends within the legal field. Additionally, I attend conferences, workshops, and seminars related to my area of specialisation to network with professionals and gain insights into the latest legal advancements. I also collaborate with legal professionals to gain practical insights and real-world perspectives, ensuring that my curriculum reflects the current demands of the legal profession.

Moreover, I utilize online resources such as legal databases and journals to access the most recent legal publications, case law, and legislative updates. I integrate practical examples into my lectures and discussions to demonstrate the relevance of legal principles in contemporary practice.

Additionally, I invite guest speakers who are actively involved in the legal field to provide students with firsthand accounts of their experiences and insights into the latest developments.

Lastly, I encourage student research on current legal issues to foster a proactive approach to staying informed and engaged with the dynamic legal landscape. By implementing these strategies, I aim to create an enriching learning environment that prepares students for the ever-changing legal landscape.

Legal Bites: Why are research and publications important in the realm of law, and how do you motivate and assist students in participating in legal scholarship?

Pallavi Mishra: As a legal scholar, I understand the immense significance of research and publications in the legal field. Engaging in research not only deepens our understanding of legal concepts and precedents but also advances collective knowledge within the legal community. For example, my PhD at the intersection of Biodiversity Laws and Corporate Laws exemplifies how legal research can bridge disciplines and provide insights into complex issues that involve both legal and scientific dimensions.

Moreover, publications have the power to shape legal practice by offering practical solutions to real-world challenges.

In my role as a legal scholar, I also strive to encourage and support students in engaging with legal scholarship. By sharing my own experiences as a researcher and highlighting the relevance of my publications, I hope to inspire students to see the tangible impact of legal scholarship. I also incorporate interdisciplinary themes into coursework, discussions, and research projects, encouraging students to explore connections between law and other fields.

Furthermore, I showcase recent publications in class or through academic platforms to demonstrate the dynamic nature of legal scholarship and to inspire students to engage with contemporary legal issues.

Legal Bites: Having navigated both faculty and administrative roles, could you discuss the variances and challenges you've faced between these distinct positions?

Pallavi Mishra: I balanced teaching and research while transitioning from Faculty In-charge of Placements at SLS Pune to Faculty In-charge of Training and Internships at SLS Noida. Discipline, time management, and a supportive team were needed to manage these duties.

Legal Bites: What guidance would you give to law students as they navigate the multitude of career paths available to them and make decisions about their professional journey?

Pallavi Mishra: To navigate the diverse career paths available to law graduates, students should self-reflect on their interests, values, and long-term goals. Explore various legal specializations and practice areas, build a professional network, seek diverse internships and externships, and seek mentorship. Stay informed about current legal trends, skill development, and alternative paths like tech laws, compliance, and policy analysis.

Balance passion and practicality by considering the job market, demand for specific skills, and growth potential. Continuous learning is essential to adapt to changes in the legal landscape and enhance career prospects.
